Railings are usually quoted per linear meter. Understand what the unit price includes and what changes it, so there are no surprises at handover.
Stainless steel railings are usually quoted per linear meter (m). This method is convenient but easily misunderstood if you do not know what the unit price includes. This article helps you read a quote correctly. Actual prices must be quoted by the workshop after a survey; what follows is only a reference for how pricing works.
The basic formula
Total price ≈ railing length (m) × unit price per meter + extra costs
Length is measured along the railing centerline; at corners and diagonal stairs, the workshop measures the real length.
The unit price per meter usually includes
- Materials: posts, handrail, bars, horizontal rails and accessories.
- Fabrication labor: cutting, welding, grinding and polishing.
- Surface finish.
- Basic transport and installation.
What changes the unit price per meter
| Factor | Effect | |---|---| | Stainless steel grade (201, 304, 316) | Changes the material price | | Tube thickness | Thicker means a higher price | | Railing style (vertical bars, cable, glass) | Each style has a different cost | | Number of posts per meter | More posts use more material and welding labor | | Accessories, wooden handrail | Add to the cost | | Height | Taller uses more material |
How is a glass railing priced?
Besides the stainless steel parts (posts, handrail, brackets), there is also tempered glass, priced by thickness and area (m²). Some quotes bundle it and some list it separately. Ask whether the quote includes the glass, how many millimeters thick it is and which type.
Costs that often arise
- Corners, curved sections and stair sections are more complex than straight runs.
- Removing the old railing.
- Drilling and anchoring bolts into hard concrete or finished floors.
- Working at height and erecting scaffolding.
- Design changes after the design is finalized.
Ask beforehand what is included and what is charged extra.
Measuring tips for a quick quote
- Measure the total length of the railing sections.
- Note the number of corners and landings.
- Note the desired height.
- Photograph each section.
- Say whether the floor is tile, concrete, stone or wood so the workshop can choose the fixing method.
Comparing two quotes for the same length
Do not compare only the figures. Compare:
- Material grade.
- Diameter and thickness of handrail and post tube.
- Number of posts and bar spacing.
- Surface finish.
- Accessories.
- Warranty.
Note
Price per meter is just a convenient way of calculating. An exact price must be based on drawings and a real survey. Contact the workshop for a detailed quote for your project.
