What to prepare when inviting a workshop to survey and quote a stainless steel project

A list of information, photos and questions that help you get an accurate quote and compare between workshops.

Quoting a stainless steel project is not like buying something off the shelf, because every site has a different size and style. The more fully you prepare, the closer the quote will be and the easier it is to compare between workshops.

Information to provide

  1. Type of item: gate, railing, staircase, canopy, kitchen table and so on.
  2. Dimensions: width, height, length. If you cannot measure yet, a photo with a tape measure as a reference is also useful.
  3. Installation location: indoors or outdoors, how far from the river, whether it gets rain splash or harsh sun.
  4. Desired style: send reference photos and drawings if you have them.
  5. Desired material grade: 201, 304, 316, or ask the workshop for advice.
  6. Surface: mirror, brushed or color-plated.
  7. Desired timeline and reference budget.

Photos to take

  • An overall view of the installation area.
  • Close-ups of the existing base, walls and posts.
  • Difficult spots: corners, level differences, obstacles.
  • The condition of the old gate or railing if it has to be removed and replaced.

Questions to ask the workshop

  • Does the quote include materials, labor, transport and installation?
  • What are the material grade and thickness of each part?
  • Are there material certificates, or can you see the stock at the workshop?
  • How are welds and surfaces treated?
  • What is the completion time and installation schedule?
  • Warranty terms: duration, scope, and who pays transport costs if repair is needed?
  • Payment method and deposit?

Comparing quotes between workshops

A price difference does not necessarily mean one workshop is expensive and another cheap. Compare these factors:

  • Material grade.
  • Tube and box thickness.
  • Quantity and size of parts.
  • Accessories (hinges, locks, tracks).
  • Surface finish.
  • Warranty.

A quote far below the general level should prompt questions about the real grade and thickness.

Do not forget

  • Ask for the quote in writing or in a clear message.
  • Agree on conditions for extra costs if the design changes.
  • Keep the photos and the drawings you finalized.

On-site survey

A workshop may survey for free or for a fee depending on the project and distance, so ask beforehand. For projects in Long Xuyen or nearby areas of the province, surveys are usually more convenient.

Sending information and photos in advance by phone or Zalo helps the workshop prepare a preliminary proposal and saves time for both sides.
