Where does stainless steel fabrication pricing come from? The factors that set the cost

Understand how material, thickness, labor, finish, accessories and transport affect a quote, so you can compare fairly.

For the same 3 meter gate, quotes can differ considerably between workshops. This article does not give a fixed price, because stainless steel prices move with the market and every project differs; instead it helps you understand where the price comes from so you can read a quote correctly. For any specific figures, please contact the workshop for an accurate quote.

1. Material grade

This is usually the biggest factor. 201, 304 and 316 stainless steel are priced differently because of their nickel and molybdenum content. Billet prices change with the raw materials market, so quotes are usually valid for a short time.

2. Thickness and size of tubes, box sections and sheets

Thicker or larger tube uses more material and weighs more, so it costs more. This is also where differences easily arise: a low quote may use thinner tube than you expect.

3. Design complexity

  • Hand-bent patterns, CNC cutting and laser engraving take more work.
  • More joints mean more welding, grinding and polishing work.
  • Curved and angled designs are harder than straight ones.

4. Surface finish

Brushed, mirror and PVD color plating involve different steps and costs. Mirror usually takes more polishing work; color plating needs its own process.

5. Accessories

Hinges, locks, wheels, tracks, motors, glass, wooden handrails, screws and so on come in many price tiers. Ask for a quote that states the type and brand of accessories.

6. Labor and time

Welding, grinding and installation depend on difficulty, height (working at height needs scaffolding) and the work site.

7. Transport and installation

The distance from the workshop to the site, the size of the product, whether a crane truck is needed, and the terrain.

8. Warranty

A long warranty with broad scope usually goes with a tight production process and good materials, so it may be reflected in the price.

9. Timing and quantity

Fluctuating raw material prices, peak construction season, or large-quantity orders can affect the quote.

How to read a quote

A transparent quote usually has:

  1. A list of items.
  2. Dimensions and quantity.
  3. Material grade and thickness.
  4. Surface finish.
  5. Accessories.
  6. Unit price and amount (or a lump-sum price).
  7. Timeline, warranty and payment terms.

Sensible ways to save

  • Reduce decorative complexity rather than frame thickness.
  • Use 304 where rust resistance is needed and 201 in dry areas.
  • Settle the design early to avoid extra costs.
  • Ask the workshop for ways to optimize materials.
