Riser height, slope, tread material, handrail and warranty: 5 things to check before ordering a stainless steel staircase.
A staircase is used every day and has to be both safe and good-looking. Before ordering a stainless steel staircase, consider these 5 points.
1. Step size and slope
Riser height should be 15 to 18 cm and tread depth 25 to 30 cm. Steps that are too high or too narrow tire the legs, especially for the elderly and small children. Divide the total floor height evenly by the number of steps so that all steps are equal.
2. Choose the material for handrails and railings
A 304 stainless steel handrail of 50 mm or 60 mm is a popular choice. Indoor staircases can use 201 to save money, while outdoor staircases or those beside a garden should use 304. You can combine a wooden handrail for a warmer look.
3. Treads: wood, stone or glass
- Wood: warm and elegant, but needs treatment against termites and moisture.
- Granite: durable and easy to clean, suitable for outdoor staircases.
- Tempered glass: modern, but choose glass at least 12 mm thick with an anti-slip finish.
4. Safety: gaps and railing height
The railing should be at least 90 cm high, with gaps between bars of no more than 10 cm so that children cannot slip through. Post bases must be fixed firmly to concrete or a steel beam.
5. Structure and warranty
For fishbone staircases and floating-tread staircases, the load-bearing steel structure must be calculated carefully. Ask the workshop to explain the structure, the steel thickness and the type of connections. Choose a workshop that gives a written warranty.
