Stainless steel canopy with metal roofing, glass or polycarbonate? How to choose the frame, slope and roofing material for townhouses, rooftops and carports.
A canopy lets you make use of a rooftop, back yard or carport. A stainless steel frame is durable and needs no painting, which suits the unpredictable sun and rain of the Mekong Delta.
Choose the roofing material
- Galvalume or insulated metal sheet: cheap and durable, but hotter without an insulation layer.
- Polycarbonate (light-transmitting plastic): lets in good light, lightweight and moderately priced. Choose a UV-resistant type.
- Tempered glass: elegant, but heavy and expensive, and needs a sturdy frame.
Stainless steel frame
The frame usually uses 304 stainless steel box sections of 40x80 or 50x100 mm, 1.5 mm thick or more for large spans. Welds must be ground smooth and polished to avoid standing water that causes rust.
Slope and drainage
The slope should be at least about 10 degrees so rain drains quickly. A flat roof easily holds water and leaks. A gutter and downpipe should be built in together.
Wind resistance
Riverside areas often have strong winds in the rainy season. The frame must be firmly anchored to concrete with base plates and expansion bolts. Avoid making a canopy overhang too far without support posts.
Reference cost
A stainless steel frame canopy with metal roofing costs from about 900.000 to 1.600.000 VND/m² depending on materials and structure. Glass roofs cost more. These are reference prices.
Legal note
Rooftop canopies and house eaves in residential areas may need a permit or approval under local regulations. Check with the authorities before building.
