Tube 0.8, 1.0, 1.2 or 1.5 mm thick? A guide to choosing the right thickness and diameter for railings, handrails, gates and fences.
For the same railing design, quotes differ greatly between workshops, usually because of different tube thickness. Too thin and it dents and wobbles; too thick and you spend money you do not need to.
Common thicknesses
- 0.8 mm: only for light furniture and decorative frames.
- 1.0 mm: for indoor railings, horizontal rails and vertical bars.
- 1.2 mm: the standard for railing posts, outdoor handrails and gate leaf frames.
- 1.5 mm and above: gate posts, load-bearing frames, canopies and heavy sliding gates.
Handrail and post diameter
Handrails commonly use 42, 50 or 60 mm. 50 mm fits the hand well, looks good and is a popular choice. Railing posts should be 50 or 60 mm with a 1.2 mm wall to be stiff enough when someone leans on them.
Suggestions by item
| Item | Recommended tube | |---|---| | Balcony railing | Posts 50x1.2 mm, rails 25x1.0 mm | | Staircase railing | Handrail 50x1.2 mm, bars 16 or 19x1.0 mm | | Double-leaf gate | Box frame 40x80x1.2, box bars 20x20x1.0 | | Fence | Box posts 50x50x1.2, box bars 14x14x1.0 | | Canopy | Box 40x80x1.5 or more, depending on span |
How to check thickness
Measure at the cut end of a tube with calipers. Ask the workshop to state the thickness in the quote so it is not made thinner than agreed.
Effect on price
1.2 mm tube costs about 15 to 20% more than 1.0 mm. But for load-bearing parts such as posts and frames, this is an investment worth making.
