Stainless steel finishes: mirror, brushed or matte, which should you choose?

A comparison of common stainless steel surface finishes, with the pros and cons for gates, railings and kitchen tables.

The same stainless steel grade with a different surface gives a very different look and durability in use. Choosing the right finish means less maintenance and a longer-lasting good appearance.

Mirror

The surface is polished through many grit levels and reflects like a mirror.

Pros: elegant, modern, easy to dust. Cons: shows fingerprints, scratches and water marks clearly; re-polishing takes work. Suits: decorative handrails, façade cladding, indoor accent details.

Brushed (hairline, No.4)

The surface has fine scratch lines running in a single direction.

Pros: hides fingerprints and small scratches very well; looks understated and stays good-looking easily. Cons: dust can settle in the grain if not wiped regularly. Suits: kitchen tables, cabinets, elevators, handrails, wall cladding in places that are often touched.

Matte (satin, 2B)

A smooth surface without harsh reflection.

Pros: a soft feel with little glare, suited to minimalist design. Cons: hard to polish out when deeply scratched. Suits: frames, cladding panels, shelves.

PVD color plating (gold, black, bronze...)

A thin color layer is applied to stainless steel by vacuum technology.

Pros: creates an elegant color while keeping the stainless steel base underneath. Cons: higher price; avoid hard rubbing on the color layer; local repairs are hard to color-match. Suits: villa gates, doors, decorative details.

Patterns, etching, CNC

Stainless steel sheets can be CNC-cut or etched with patterns to make gates and screens. Note: the more detail there is, the more polishing and cleaning work it takes.

Quick comparison

| Finish | Shows marks | Easy to wipe | Feel | |---|---|---|---| | Mirror | High | Easy | Luxurious | | Brushed | Low | Medium | Understated | | Matte | Medium | Easy | Minimalist | | PVD plating | Depends | Needs a gentle hand | Eye-catching |

Notes by environment

  • Outdoors, near the road: prefer brushed to hide dust and dirt.
  • Riverside, humid and salty: a finish with few details that is easy to wipe, combined with a suitable material such as 316.
  • Where children touch a lot: brushed or matte; mirror gets dirty fast.

How to choose

Ask yourself: do you like cleaning often? If not, choose brushed. If you want a strong aesthetic accent in an area that is rarely touched, mirror or PVD plating is a good choice. The workshop can fabricate a small sample for you to see in person before you decide.
