The handrail is the part touched most. Choose the right section, material and connection method for a comfortable, safe and durable grip.
In a staircase railing set, the handrail is usually touched the most every day. A handrail that fits the hand, is solid and is not freezing cold makes going up and down more comfortable. Here are things to consider.
Cross-section shape
- Round: the most common, easy to grip, suited to all ages. Diameter usually 42 to 60 mm.
- Rectangular box or oval: looks modern, with a wide contact surface for the hand, often used in minimalist designs.
- Large tube of 76 mm or more: looks imposing but small hands may struggle to wrap around it.
Suitable diameter
For Vietnamese hands, a round handrail of about 50 mm is a common choice. Homes with elderly people or small children should choose a diameter that fits the grip, neither too large nor too small.
Material thickness
Thin-walled tube dents easily on impact and vibrates when gripped. Many workshops use tube about 1.0 to 1.5 mm thick for residential handrails. Ask clearly about the thickness in the quote.
Combining materials
- All-stainless steel handrail: durable and easy to clean, but may feel a bit cold on the hand in cold weather.
- Wooden handrail on stainless steel posts: soft to the hand, warm and highly attractive; you need to choose suitable wood and treat it against moisture and termites.
- Plastic or composite handrail: also available now, but durability depends on product quality.
Height and continuity
- Staircase handrail height is usually about 0.9 m from the tread nosing.
- The handrail is continuous through landings, with no breaks at turning corners.
- The end should be rounded or curved down to the wall.
Wall-mounted handrail
For narrow staircases, a wall-mounted handrail is neat and saves space. It needs sturdy brackets, spacing between brackets that is not too far, and a gap to the wall large enough for the hand to grip.
Accessories and connections
- Brackets, elbows and end caps in the same stainless steel material.
- Wall screws must suit the wall material (brick, concrete).
- Elbow welds should be ground flat and polished, never lumpy.
Handrail maintenance
- Wipe with a soft damp cloth and avoid strong chemicals.
- For wooden handrails: wipe dry and apply maintenance oil periodically.
- Check post and bracket play every few months.
