Tube and box thickness affects stiffness, lifespan and price. Suggestions for choosing by item so it is neither too thin nor excessive.
Two gates that look identical but differ a lot in price usually differ in material thickness. Too thin and it dents and warps easily; too thick and it costs money and weight you do not need. Here is a way of thinking to choose sensibly.
What does "ly" mean?
In the trade, "ly" means millimeter. A tube that is 1.2 ly thick has a 1.2 mm wall. When measured with calipers, small deviations (for example, the label says 1.2 but it measures 1.1) can occur because of mill tolerances, but a large difference is something to question.
The parts of a gate
- Outer frame and main posts: bear the main load and should be thicker.
- Vertical and horizontal decorative bars: can be thinner.
- Patterns and decorative slats: mainly for looks, use small sections.
- Hinges, wheels and tracks: choose accessories whose load rating matches the weight of the leaf.
Reference suggestions by item
The figures below are for reference only and should be confirmed with the workshop based on actual size and conditions:
- Townhouse double-leaf gate: large box frame of about 40x80 or 40x40, about 1.2 to 1.5 mm thick; small box bars of 14 to 20 mm and 0.8 to 1.0 mm thick.
- Wide sliding gate: thicker frame, with extra reinforcing bars and a sturdy enough track.
- Fence: posts of about 40x40 to 50x50, small bars.
- Railing: 50 or 60 mm handrail tube about 1.0 to 1.5 mm thick; posts thicker than the handrail; bars of 12 to 16 mm.
- Glass railing: posts and brackets must withstand horizontal load, so they should be thick enough and firmly welded.
Factors that change the choice
- Size: the wider the gate leaf, the thicker the frame and the more reinforcement needed.
- Location: near the road, or where children lean and swing on it, should be thicker.
- Material: 304 is slightly harder than 201, but thickness is still the deciding factor in stiffness.
- Budget: reducing thickness is the quickest way to cut the price but it affects lifespan.
Signs that thickness is not enough
- Tubes dent on light impact.
- The gate leaf sags or warps over time.
- Welds crack or break from vibration.
How to check on delivery
- Use calipers to measure several points on the tube wall.
- Compare with the quote (for example: 40x80 box, 1.2 mm thick).
- Check that welds are full and free of pits.
Advice
Ask for a quote that states the material grade, tube size and thickness for each item. If you want to save money, reduce the thickness of decorative parts rather than the load-bearing frame.
